People buy into the leader before they buy into the vision.
—John C. Maxwell
Leadership is the key to 99 percent of all successful efforts.
—Erskine Bowles
The employer generally gets the employees he deserves.
—J. Paul Getty
I love it when a leader who is recognised the world over summarizes 50 years of their leadership wisdom into one line.
I just gave 3 examples of this kind of wisdom. Do you believe them?
Do you think that someone with grand vision and plans will still fail if he/she has no followers?
Is it really leadership that accounts for 99% of your success and you didn’t even know that was something you needed to work on? He doesn’t say 25% or even 50%. He says 99%. Could this be important?
And J. Paul Getty says that you get the employees you deserve. If you have great staff, you have earned it. You must be treating them the way they expect to be treated. If you don’t have great staff, is there room for improvement in how you deal with your people? Usually if we have weak staff we think it is just because there are no good staff members out there. It doesn’t usually occur to us that the good people go elsewhere and that sometimes we drive the good ones away without even realizing it.
I’ll bet any dentist can relate to all 3 statements in relation to how things are going in their practice. These statements can help confirm whether current leadership is good, bad or ugly.
And yet, how much time does the average dentist spend on leadership development? I think for most of us it is zilch, zero, nothing.
It took me a while to learn this myself. I always thought success was simply implementing the correct tactics and systems that other dentists were having success with. And while that is important, even critical, if no one is following your lead, you cannot implement even great ideas.
There was a time when staff and patient morale at my office was pitiful. No one liked working there and patients did not like how they were being treated either. My office is called Deer Valley Dental Care or Deer Valley for short. There was a time when the staff referred to it as ‘Death Valley’.
No office can rise higher than the leader. It was not until I understood that and did something about it personally that my office came to life. Now patients and staff love the place and so do I.
Leadership specifically as it pertains to dentists is going to be a big part of my presentation in Cabo San Lucas this January.
