Dentists have a history of being dissatisfied with the performance of their manager. But is it any surprise that they usually fail?
Most dental office managers come from a background of dental assisting or dental reception. And they are usually the best you have had in your office at those functions.
But management is a whole different skill. Doing the work is far different from directing others to do it. That requires hiring skills and judgement, training skills, leadership and setting a constant example of the behaviours you expect, organization and follow-up on the tasks you have appointed, motivation skills to get them to stick with it, disciplinary actions when they willfully resist your direction, and ultimately termination skills for those that don’t work out.
And that does not even get into planning, reporting, and compliance with the ever increasing legal requirements in both the medical and employment areas.
After all, where would they learn those skills. As a dentist, even if you had those skills (I have not met one yet, including myself), when would you have time to train them? You need to be at the chair to keep production going.
Which is why in my office, 10 years ago I switched from a dental receptionist as my manager to a non-dental person who instead has experience in all those areas mentioned above.
Since then the practice has doubled in size.
When we consult, we are often used to help find a new manager. Usually we look outside the dental field; not just from within.
This is why we also provide training for managers of these specific management skills, since so many dentists have employees that are long serving and loyal and they want to give them a chance. That way we can help develop someone who only has a dental background to someone who can manage and lead the practice.
So in my opinion, you have 2 good options; hiring a real manager or training a dental person to become a manager. There is one option I do not recommend, which is what most dentists do, which is to hire their favorite staff member and then can’t understand why someone who was so good at a specific task is failing in management.
If you do want to upgrade the management skills of your current manager, check our website for the next Management 101 Seminar that we are offering.
